I don't claim to be an expert fisherman ... just a guy who loves to fish and has been blessed for his efforts. I learned a long time ago that in fishing, and in much of life, you get out of it what you put into it. I work hard when fishing, I study a lot, and always try to learn something on every outing. I hope you can use the information I post on this blog to learn something as well. Thanks for following along!

Super Tuesday ...

The morning started off with a bang ... 3 fish within about 45 minutes. All three came on an orange jointed Rapala J-9. The spawn bite was slooooow ... so I tried something else! After 8:00 I lost one real nice fish that took a sac and caught a sucker on the J-9. Yup, it hit a crankbait! Sorry, no pictures of that thing! My buddy got a small steelie on spawn and that was all we did. Fish from 6:30 to 4:00, including about an hour in the marina.

Water was down considerably and still muddy from the storm. A few more days and it should be in prime condition.

So ... Are these fish things any good to eat?

I'm sure some of my angling friends will want to hang me for posting this, but ...

I'm having some problems lately with tendinitis in my elbows. A good friend of mine (who is one of the recipients of the fish that I selectively harvest for eggs) suggested I keep a few and eat them for the Omega-3. Well, I'm not a big fan of eating salmonoids. So, he then suggested taking fish oil tablets. Not being so sure about that, I consulted that know-all, do-all, answer-all source that some of you may have heard about called ... Google. I found some VERY interesting factoids about salmonoids. If you're interested ... CLICK HERE!!!!:

Steelhead Season Has Arrived!

Awesome day on the river today Lost an absolute pig on my first drift. Broke me off where the 8 lb flouro leader meets the mono. Then went 4 for 7 with my buddy Matt ... got three steelies and a seeferelon brown trout. Had another big fish break a Gamakatsu Octopus hook in half YIKES! Caught everything floating spawn, mostly on pink sacs. I'm really starting to like the Sheffield floats I've been using. When offset by the proper sinker weight they provide very little resistance and go down easily. Today I fished with a 9 gram float that allowed me to throw my spawn sacs a long ways. I found the steelies in the aftenoon were laying in the shade of a tree on the other side of the river. The extra weight and my 10'6" rod allowed me to reach them.

Had a tough day technology wise. Dropped my camera on the bank after taking pics of the first fish ... and watched it roll right into the river before I could get to it. Then got so much fish slime on my camera phone that the lens got covered and the pics look slimey! Oh well, you can get the general idea from the pics!

I'm hoping to get out again this Thursday, but the rain we received today and the forecast for the next few days may flood the river. Only time will tell!

When the Conditions Don't Cooperate ...

I wanted to fish in the worst way this weekend, but I've made up my mind that I'm done on the ice for the year. That means ... hello long rods! However, it's tough fishing long rods through an 8" hole. So ... maybe next weekend!

What does a fisherman do when they can't fish? That's easy ... SHOP! Spent a an hour or so at Dick's today making good use of some discount coupons. I loaded up on cranks and floats. Flicker Shads and Clackin Minnows ... 6.2 to 8 gram Sheffield floats.

The forecast this week calls for 40 and 50 degree temps and only a little rain. The rivers should be open and fishable by Saturday ... and the marinas will not be far behind. Can't wait to tie into a few Steelies and Browns!
